Why Pressure Over 80 PSI Is a Problem


Water pressure that stays consistently above 80 PSI acts like a constant strain on your entire plumbing ecosystem:


  • Shorter Appliance Lifespan: Solenoid valves inside dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers are only rated for standard pressure and fail prematurely when overloaded.

  • Water Hammer: Fast-closing valves create a violent hydraulic shock wave through your pipes, causing banging noises that stress pipe joints and welds over time.

  • Leaking Fixtures: Running toilets, dripping faucets, and weeping relief valves on water heaters are usually the first warning signs of excessive pressure.


How to Check & Fix Water Pressure


  1. Test with a Gauge: Screw an inexpensive water pressure gauge ($10–$15 at hardware stores) onto an outdoor hose bib or washing machine cold-water hookup with no other water running in the house.

  2. Inspect the PRV: If your pressure exceeds 80 PSI, check if you have a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) installed near your main water shutoff valve.

  3. Adjust or Replace: If a PRV is present, you can adjust its top bolt to dial the pressure down. If adjusting it doesn't lower the pressure, the valve's internal diaphragm has likely failed and needs replacement.
